Matters Unknown

‘MATTERS UNKNOWN’ makes beginnings of us all. In kaleidoscopic visions, forces collide, expand, and contract, as the music finds a balanced path through.

This is the debut project from Jonathan Enser (Nubiyan Twist), a multi-instrumentalist and composer. He has assembled an ensemble featuring some of the most powerful forces exploring music in the UK, each bringing a unique voice to his compositions. Musicians from Nerija, Nala Sinephro, Nubya Garcia, Werkha, and beyond contribute to ‘MATTERS UNKNOWN,’ a project that commands attention.

The album explores the interplay of space and time, inviting listeners to sink into its immersive soundscapes. Remarkably, despite being a new ensemble, the band feels cohesive, with Enser’s innovative production unifying it all. We Aren’t Just is a rare blend of diverse influences, coming together with effortless synergy to create music that feels both adventurous and perfectly attuned to the moment.

Their debut album, We Aren’t Just, is a bold fusion of the familiar and the unknown. Enser’s writing, deeply rooted in spiritual and soulful expression, flows through grooves spanning from blues to West Coast trap, all filtered through the rich textures of African diasporic influence. The sound is spacious and unhurried, building a sense of motion without restlessness. Influenced by Donald Byrd, Enser shows promise of a long and magical journey ahead, both as a trumpeter and a producer.

Following his debut album, Enser released Eloquence on the iconic Blue Note Records and became a resident at London’s famed Total Refreshment Centre studios. Since his amputation in 2023, he has focused on production and decolonial practice, approaching it from his unique perspective on disability and grief. He now collaborates with folkloric practitioners to forge new traditions rooted in reciprocity.
