Born and raised in NZ on hip hop, jazz and dance music, drummer/composer Myele Manzanza is has established himself as significant musical force on London’s dynamic scene of new wave jazz artists. Since his days as part of cult combo Electric Wire Hustle, Myele has gone on to release six solo albums, with tours and collaborations alongside Jordan Rakei, Theo Parrish, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Recloose & Amp Fiddler amongst others. Since moving to London 2 years ago, Myele has established a strong live presence in his new base; his band has shared stages with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, The Bad Plus, Alfa Mist, and drawing sold out houses to top venues such as The Jazz Café & Ronnie Scott’s.
A 5-EP series of works that have been composed during the 2020 Covid 19 lockdown, ‘Crisis & Opportunity’ was born out of the necessity for Myele to direct his creative energy in a productive direction and maintain his growth as an artist. ‘Crisis & Opportunity Vol.1 London’ put him on the London Jazz Scene map, featuring a cast of London’s top jazz talent and garnered support from everyone ranging from Jazz FM through to Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum & Mary Anne Hobbs. ‘Crisis & Opportunity Vol. 2 – Peaks’ taking inspiration from the hip hop beat tape format and delivering thirteen doses of exhilarating, Jazz infused bottled lightning. ‘Crisis & Opportunity Vol. 3 – Unfold’, dropping November 2022, see’s Myele show his flair for production at the intersections of dance music. Featuring collaborations from the likes of Omar, China Moses, Rosie Frater-Taylor, Rachel Fraser & Wallace, this album is equally fit for the festival stage as well as the intimate headphone listen.
